Variable Weaving Reed

In this research, a special three-dimensional variable reed was developed. This reed may be installed in most types of looms in place of the original loom reed.

Combined with a digital planning tool, the Variable Reed design opens up new design possibilities for weaved textiles. It allows for new structural possibilities and new properties not achievable in other ways.

The variable reed enables weaving in various angles between the warp and weft yarns, which affects the density and the direction of the weft. This method may enable the creation of three-dimensional or volumetric surfaces as well as finished products that use only minimal postprocessing actions, thus saving production processes and costs.  In addition, with the Variable Reed, it is possible to fabricate garments that meet at least two sustainable values. The first is waste reduction when producing seamless garments, thus significantly reducing the of raw materials and pollution caused by waste treatment. The second value is Monomateriality – a garment made of only one material that can be easily recycled.
